Campo Maior é uma serena e

tradição conta que teve origem na vontade de três famílias camponesas que se
resolveram juntar para formar uma povoação e se protegerem mutuamente.

O nome da vila vem dos romanos
(Campus Maior) mas vai mantendo a memória da posterior ocupação muçulmana nas
casas caiadas, com toques de azul e de ocre. Inicialmente pertenceu ao Bispado
de Badajoz e só mais tarde, com o Tratado de Alcanizes em 1297 (um tratado de
paz entre Espanha e Portugal), foi integrada em território português. Mesmo
depois disso, sempre manteve uma relação muito familiar com a próxima vila de
Badajoz.

A população desta vila é
conhecida pelo seu carácter. No ano em que a vontade de todos coincide,
realiza-se uma das festas populares mais interessantes do país - a Festa das
Flores, também conhecida como Festa do Povo. Então os moradores de cada rua
juntam-se para enfeitar de flores de papel em composições alegres e coloridas
(normalmente na primeira semana de Setembro). Milhares de pessoas costumam
visitar a vila decorada de papel e de cor.

De interesse histórico, pode ver
em Campo Maior a Capela dos Ossos construída em 1766, uma das três existentes
em Portugal.

Campo Maior is a serene and
peaceful village in the south of Portugal, very close to the border with Spain.
Tradition has it that it originated from the will of three peasant families who
decided to join together to form a village and protect each other.

The town's name comes from the
Romans (Campus Maior) but it retains the memory of the later Muslim occupation
in the whitewashed houses, with touches of blue and ochre. Initially it
belonged to the Bishopric of Badajoz and only later, with the Treaty of Alcanizes
in 1297 (a peace treaty between Spain and Portugal), was it integrated into
Portuguese territory. Even after that, it always maintained a very familiar
relationship with the nearby town of Badajoz.

The people of this town are known
for their character. In the year when everyone's wishes coincide, one of the
country's most interesting popular festivals takes place - the Flower Festival,
also known as the People's Festival. Then the residents of each street get
together to decorate them with paper flowers in cheerful and colourful
compositions (usually in the first week of September). Thousands of people
usually visit the village decorated with paper and colour.

Of historical interest, in Campo
Maior you can see the Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones) built in 1766, one of
only three in Portugal.
